Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
Meaning
The ECM has detected a general malfunction in the secondary air injection system. The system, which pumps fresh air into the exhaust ports during cold start to reduce HC and CO emissions and accelerate catalyst light-off, is not operating within expected parameters.
Common causes
- Defective or seized secondary air pump
- Damaged or fouled check valve in the air circuit
- Faulty switching valve (solenoid)
- Leaks or blockages in ducts and hoses
- Defective air pump relay
- Short circuit or open circuit in system wiring
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine) light illuminated
- Elevated HC and CO emissions at inspection
- Possible abnormal noise from air pump during cold start
- Extended catalyst warm-up time to operating temperature
- Possible failure of emissions test
Severity
Medium severity: does not compromise immediate drivability, but causes elevated emissions and can damage the catalytic converter over time if left unrepaired.
What to do
- Read and record all present DTC codes and freeze frame data
- Visually inspect the air pump, hoses, check valves, and electrical connectors for obvious damage, corrosion, or cracks
- Verify electrical supply and ground to the air pump and relay using a multimeter
- Test mechanical operation of the pump by applying direct voltage
- Replace or repair identified faulty components and clear the code to confirm resolution
