EGR Flow Excessive

Meaning

The ECU detects more exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) than expected. Too much burnt gas is being fed back into the intake, disrupting combustion.

Common causes

  • EGR valve stuck in the open position
  • Faulty EGR position sensor or DPFE sensor
  • Carbon deposits holding the valve open
  • Faulty EGR control or drive circuit
  • Clogged EGR passages distorting the measured pressure

Symptoms

  • Rough, uneven idle
  • Stalling at idle or low load
  • Hesitation and loss of pep
  • Smoky or erratic running when cold
  • Check-engine light on

Severity

Moderate: the engine may run poorly and stall at idle, but there is no risk of immediate damage.

What to do

  1. Read EGR position and flow to check whether the valve stays open
  2. Remove and clean the EGR valve and its passages of deposits
  3. Check the position/DPFE sensor and its wiring
  4. Verify the valve command and repeat the test after cleaning
