Glow Plug Circuit — Malfunction
Meaning
The ECM has detected a general fault in the glow plug preheating circuit. The system is unable to correctly heat the combustion chambers before starting, compromising cold-start combustion in diesel engines.
Common causes
- Faulty main glow plug relay (preheat relay)
- Short circuit or open circuit in the main glow plug wiring harness
- Blown glow plug circuit fuse
- Faulty glow plug control module (GCU)
- Insufficient supply voltage to the glow plug circuit
- Open or high-resistance glow plug circuit ground connection
Symptoms
- Glow plug indicator absent or abnormal
- Hard cold start or no-start condition
- White or grey exhaust smoke during cold start
- Unstable idle after cold start
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
Severity
High: without adequate preheating, diesel engines experience severe cold-start difficulties and risk damage from prolonged incomplete combustion.
What to do
- Check the preheat relay and glow plug circuit fuse
- Measure voltage at the glow plug bus during the preheat cycle
- Test each glow plug individually to rule out multiple failures
- Check the GCU module and its wiring
- Repair wiring or replace faulty components as identified by diagnosis
