Engine Coolant Over-Temperature Condition
Meaning
The ECU has detected that coolant temperature exceeds the maximum critical threshold. The engine is overheating; the ECU may activate protective measures such as fuel enrichment, ignition timing retard, or cylinder deactivation.
Common causes
- Insufficient coolant level due to leak or evaporation
- Thermostat stuck closed
- Cooling fan not operating (failed motor, relay, or fuse)
- Clogged or restricted radiator
- Failed water pump (broken impeller or drive loss)
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) on and/or red temperature warning light
- Temperature gauge in the red zone
- Steam from the engine bay in severe cases
- Power loss and possible limp-home activation
- Smell of burning coolant or visible fluid on the ground
Severity
Critical: overheating can cause permanent engine damage (head gasket failure, head warping, seizure); stop the vehicle and shut off the engine immediately.
What to do
- Pull over safely and switch off the engine immediately
- Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot
- After cooling: check coolant level and inspect for visible leaks
- Check the cooling fan, thermostat, and water pump
- Do not restart the engine until the root cause is resolved
