O2 sensor circuit (bank 1, sensor 1)
Meaning
The control unit detects a fault in the upstream (pre-catalyst) oxygen sensor circuit on bank 1. The sensor signal is outside the expected range or implausible.
Common causes
- Worn-out or failed upstream oxygen sensor
- Damaged or corroded sensor wiring or connector
- Exhaust leak near the sensor
- Sensor contamination (oil, coolant or silicone residue)
- Incorrect sensor ground or supply
- Pin or connection fault on the control unit side
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Poor fuel economy
- Rough engine running
- Sluggish acceleration response
- Failed emissions test
Severity
Moderate: the car is drivable but mixture control is less precise, with higher fuel use and emissions while the fault persists.
What to do
- Read the upstream sensor live data and check that the signal is switching
- Inspect the sensor wiring, connector and ground for damage or corrosion
- Check for an exhaust leak near the sensor
- If the circuit is sound, replace the upstream oxygen sensor and clear the code to verify
