O2 sensor circuit (bank 1, sensor 1)

Meaning

The control unit detects a fault in the upstream (pre-catalyst) oxygen sensor circuit on bank 1. The sensor signal is outside the expected range or implausible.

Common causes

  • Worn-out or failed upstream oxygen sensor
  • Damaged or corroded sensor wiring or connector
  • Exhaust leak near the sensor
  • Sensor contamination (oil, coolant or silicone residue)
  • Incorrect sensor ground or supply
  • Pin or connection fault on the control unit side

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough engine running
  • Sluggish acceleration response
  • Failed emissions test

Severity

Moderate: the car is drivable but mixture control is less precise, with higher fuel use and emissions while the fault persists.

What to do

  1. Read the upstream sensor live data and check that the signal is switching
  2. Inspect the sensor wiring, connector and ground for damage or corrosion
  3. Check for an exhaust leak near the sensor
  4. If the circuit is sound, replace the upstream oxygen sensor and clear the code to verify
