Coolant thermostat (coolant temperature below regulating temperature)
Meaning
The control unit detects that the engine is not reaching normal operating temperature within the expected time. This typically points to a thermostat stuck open, letting coolant circulate too early.
Common causes
- Thermostat stuck in the open position
- Faulty or inaccurate engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
- Low coolant level
- Cooling fan running constantly
- Wrong opening temperature or incorrect thermostat for the model
Symptoms
- Very slow engine warm-up
- Weak or absent cabin heat when cold
- Higher fuel consumption
- Temperature gauge reading lower than normal
- Check-engine light on
Severity
Minor: the car is drivable, but a cold-running engine uses more fuel, emits more and heats the cabin poorly.
What to do
- Read the coolant temperature live and check whether it reaches operating temperature within the expected time
- Check the coolant level and rule out a cooling fan running constantly
- Verify the ECT sensor by comparing its reading with an independent temperature measurement
- If warm-up stays too slow, replace the thermostat (and the ECT sensor if faulty)
