Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor circuit high
Meaning
The control unit detects an intake air temperature sensor signal that is too high, typical of an open circuit or a sensor reading an implausible value (apparent very low temperature).
Common causes
- Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
- Open sensor wiring (open circuit)
- Loose, corroded or disconnected connector
- Missing or degraded sensor ground
- Faulty sensor integrated in the MAF (on some vehicles)
Symptoms
- Minor drivability issues
- Possible hard starting in temperature extremes
- Slightly non-optimal fueling when cold
- Check-engine light on
Severity
Minor: the car stays usable, with at most small drivability imperfections until the sensor is repaired.
What to do
- Read the IAT sensor air temperature value and compare it with ambient temperature on a cold engine
- Inspect the sensor wiring and connector for breaks, corrosion or loose contacts
- Check the sensor ground and, where applicable, the sensor integrated in the MAF
- If the readings remain implausible, replace the IAT sensor (or the MAF if integrated)
