Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low — Low Flow
Meaning
Measured common-rail pressure is below the minimum expected value during low-demand operation. The ECM detects that the high-pressure pump cannot maintain the target pressure under light load.
Common causes
- Internal high-pressure pump leakage (worn valves or piston)
- Rail pressure relief valve (PRV) stuck open
- Clogged fuel filter restricting supply to the pump
- High-pressure circuit leak (fittings, injectors)
- Faulty fuel volume control valve (FCV/MPROP)
- Low transfer pump delivery pressure
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Hard or prolonged cold start
- Rough or unstable idle
- Power loss at low rpm
- Possible grey-white smoke on start-up
Severity
High: insufficient rail pressure compromises fuel atomisation and can damage injectors over time.
What to do
- Read live rail pressure and compare against ECM target at light load
- Check transfer pump flow and pressure (low-pressure side)
- Inspect and replace the fuel filter if clogged
- Inspect the PRV for sticking or wear
- Perform a high-pressure pump leakage test per manufacturer procedure
