Fuel System — Small Leak Detected
Meaning
The engine control module has detected that the rail pressure drop is moderately above what is expected for the operating conditions. A small fuel leak exists in the high-pressure circuit that reduces system efficiency but does not prevent operation at all RPM ranges.
Common causes
- Injector with a minor internal leak (moderately elevated back-leak)
- Rail fitting, high-pressure line, or seal with micro-permeability
- Pressure limiter valve (PLV) with a slightly damaged seat not sealing perfectly
- HP pump with minor wear causing reduced volumetric efficiency
- Rail pressure sensor with not fully tightened thread
- Pressure regulating valve with partially deteriorated seat
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Rough idle or cold-start difficulty
- Slight power reduction under load
- Rail pressure marginally below target at mid to high RPM
- Symptoms may be mild or absent under normal driving conditions
Severity
Moderate to high: a small leak tends to worsen over time; if uncorrected it can escalate to a large leak (P0093) with risk of engine shutdown.
What to do
- Perform a rail pressure leak-down test with the engine off to identify the leak area
- Compare injector back-leak values to identify any injectors with internal leakage
- Check and torque all HP fittings to specification
- Verify the integrity of the PLV and rail pressure sensor
- Replace any component showing even minor leakage
