Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too High
Meaning
Fuel pressure exceeds the value requested by the ECU. Excessive pressure can stress the components of the injection system.
Common causes
- Stuck or faulty pressure regulator or metering valve
- Rail pressure sensor reporting an incorrect value
- Restricted or kinked fuel return line
- Short circuit in the pressure regulator wiring
- Incorrect pressure command due to an internal fault
- Rarely, a high-pressure pump with faulty regulation
Symptoms
- Limp mode
- Rough, irregular running
- Abnormal noise from the injection system
- Power loss
- Check-engine light on
Severity
High: the vehicle may enter limp mode and excessive pressure can damage components.
What to do
- Read live data: desired vs actual rail pressure and regulator/metering-valve duty
- Verify the return line is not restricted or crushed
- Check the rail pressure sensor and its wiring
- Replace the regulator/metering valve if it stays stuck or fails to regulate correctly
