Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too High

Meaning

Fuel pressure exceeds the value requested by the ECU. Excessive pressure can stress the components of the injection system.

Common causes

  • Stuck or faulty pressure regulator or metering valve
  • Rail pressure sensor reporting an incorrect value
  • Restricted or kinked fuel return line
  • Short circuit in the pressure regulator wiring
  • Incorrect pressure command due to an internal fault
  • Rarely, a high-pressure pump with faulty regulation

Symptoms

  • Limp mode
  • Rough, irregular running
  • Abnormal noise from the injection system
  • Power loss
  • Check-engine light on

Severity

High: the vehicle may enter limp mode and excessive pressure can damage components.

What to do

  1. Read live data: desired vs actual rail pressure and regulator/metering-valve duty
  2. Verify the return line is not restricted or crushed
  3. Check the rail pressure sensor and its wiring
  4. Replace the regulator/metering valve if it stays stuck or fails to regulate correctly
