Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low
Meaning
The pressure in the common rail (diesel) or direct-injection system is below the value requested by the ECU. The engine is not receiving fuel at the required pressure.
Common causes
- Weak or worn high-pressure pump
- Clogged fuel filter
- Faulty pressure regulator or metering valve
- Leaking injectors that bleed off pressure
- Weak low-pressure supply/lift pump
- Air in the fuel system or lines drawing in air
Symptoms
- Power loss and limp mode
- Hard or impossible starting
- Sudden stalling
- Hesitation under load
- Check-engine light on
Severity
High: the vehicle may enter limp mode or fail to start, severely reducing mobility.
What to do
- Read live data: desired vs actual rail pressure and metering-valve correction
- Replace/check the fuel filter and verify the low-pressure supply
- Carry out an injector return (back-leak) test to find leaking injectors
- Check the regulator/metering valve and assess high-pressure pump efficiency
