Crankshaft/Camshaft Correlation — Bank 2 Sensor B

Meaning

The ECU detects a phase misalignment between the crankshaft position and the Bank 2 exhaust camshaft position (CMP). The offset exceeds the manufacturer's permitted threshold.

Common causes

  • Stretched or jumped timing chain, Bank 2
  • Sticking or sludge-blocked exhaust VVT actuator on Bank 2
  • Faulty or intermittent Bank 2 exhaust CMP sensor
  • Faulty CKP sensor or excessive air gap to the reluctor wheel
  • Insufficient oil pressure to the Bank 2 exhaust VVT actuator

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light (MIL) on
  • Hard start or no-start condition
  • Power loss and torque irregularity
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible metallic noise from the timing drive

Severity

High: timing misalignment can cause severe internal engine damage; diagnose immediately before further driving.

What to do

  1. Check engine oil level and condition; replace if necessary
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 timing chain for slack or tooth skip
  3. Test the Bank 2 exhaust VVT actuator: oil pressure and circulation
  4. Test the Bank 2 exhaust CMP sensor with an oscilloscope
  5. Replace the timing chain or VVT actuator if out of specification
