Crankshaft/Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1, Sensor A)
Meaning
The ECU detects that the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft is out of correlation. The two signals do not match, indicating a timing misalignment or an imprecise sensor.
Common causes
- Stretched or jumped timing chain/belt (off by a tooth)
- Faulty oil control / VVT valve
- Failed camshaft or crankshaft position sensor
- Low oil pressure or dirty oil slowing the VVT actuator
- Damaged reluctor/tone wheel or worn timing tensioner
Symptoms
- Hard or prolonged starting
- Metallic rattle from the timing drive
- Rough running and unstable idle
- Power loss
- Check-engine light on
Severity
High: a timing misalignment can lead to mechanical damage; avoid prolonged use until it is verified.
What to do
- Read the timing deviation between the camshaft and crankshaft
- Check the engine oil level, condition and pressure
- Inspect the timing-drive marks (chain/belt, tensioner)
- Check the sensors and VVT valve before dismantling the timing drive
