Exhaust Cam Timing — Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
Meaning
The engine control module has detected that the Bank 1 exhaust camshaft timing is more advanced than the calculated target and cannot retard to the correct position. The VVT actuator is unable to return the exhaust camshaft to the intended retarded position.
Common causes
- VVT solenoid (OCV) for Bank 1 exhaust stuck in open or partially open position
- VVT vane-type phaser for exhaust stuck in the advanced position due to wear or deposits
- Excessive oil pressure or faulty pressure-relief valve holding the phaser in advance
- Degraded engine oil with altered viscosity interfering with phaser drain-back
- Slack timing chain or belt causing incorrect actual-position readout
- Incorrect CMP B signal on Bank 1 indicating a false advanced position
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Rough or unstable idle
- Power reduction at high RPM
- Possible rattling noise from timing-drive area when warm
- Increased fuel consumption and emissions
Severity
High: permanently advanced exhaust camshaft timing reduces efficiency and can cause pressure pulses in the manifolds; long-term operation may damage valves and the timing drive.
What to do
- Check that the Bank 1 exhaust VVT solenoid closes correctly with the engine off
- Verify OCV solenoid resistance and PWM signal during active diagnosis
- Check engine oil level, quality, and pressure
- Check timing chain/belt tension for jumped teeth
- Replace the Bank 1 exhaust VVT phaser if mechanically stuck
