VVT Exhaust Cam Actuator B — Circuit (Bank 1)
Meaning
The engine control module has detected an electrical fault in the VVT actuator control circuit (oil control valve) for exhaust camshaft B on Bank 1. The control signal is absent, out of range, or the circuit exhibits a short circuit, open, or abnormal resistance.
Common causes
- Faulty or oil-deposit-clogged VVT solenoid (OCV) for Bank 1 exhaust
- VVT exhaust solenoid wiring open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power
- Corroded, loose, or damaged solenoid connector
- Blown fuse or faulty relay for the Bank 1 exhaust VVT circuit
- Defective ECM output driver for the exhaust VVT solenoid
- Supply voltage or ground fault in the Bank 1 exhaust VVT circuit
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Rough idle, cold or warm
- Torque and power loss at mid to high RPM
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible increase in NOx emissions
Severity
High: loss of exhaust camshaft timing control fixes the VVT system in a non-optimal position, reducing performance and increasing emissions.
What to do
- Measure the Bank 1 exhaust VVT solenoid resistance and compare with specifications
- Verify supply voltage and PWM signal at the solenoid connector
- Check wiring for shorts to ground or power and circuit continuity
- Clean or replace the Bank 1 exhaust VVT solenoid if clogged
- Check engine oil level and quality
