DPF Differential Pressure Too High
Meaning
The pressure difference across the DPF inlet and outlet is excessive: the filter is heavily loaded or blocked with soot and ash.
Common causes
- DPF clogged with soot or saturated with ash
- Repeatedly failed or interrupted regenerations
- Faulty differential-pressure sensor or hoses
- Too many short trips preventing regeneration
- Regeneration additive (where fitted) depleted or missing
- An upstream problem producing excess soot
Symptoms
- Limp mode
- Reduced power
- Check-engine and/or DPF light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Frequent unsuccessful regeneration attempts
Severity
High: the DPF is close to blocking; if untreated the vehicle stays in limp mode.
What to do
- Read estimated soot/ash load, back-pressure and the regeneration history
- Run a regeneration (including a forced one) under suitable conditions
- Check the differential-pressure sensor and its hoses
- Clean or replace the DPF if ash-saturated and find out why regeneration is not completing
