Fuel Injector Control Module — Malfunction

Meaning

The ECM has detected an internal malfunction in the Fuel Injector Control Module. The module is unable to correctly command the injectors, compromising fuel delivery to the engine.

Common causes

  • Internal ECM/PCM failure (damaged injector driver circuits)
  • Short circuit in the injector wiring that damaged the control module
  • ECM supply voltage or ground circuit out of specification
  • Prolonged overheating of the control module
  • Incorrect or corrupt ECM software update
  • Loss of injector calibration data in ECM memory

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • One or more cylinders without injection (multiple misfires)
  • Hard start or no-start condition
  • Unstable engine operation or sudden stall
  • Possible limp-home mode with reduced power

Severity

High: a fuel injector control module failure can render the vehicle unable to start and may cause damage to the entire injection system.

What to do

  1. Check ECM supply voltage and ground connections (battery voltage, ground continuity)
  2. Inspect injector wiring harness for shorts that may have damaged the module
  3. Read all stored DTCs and verify for concurrent injector fault codes
  4. Perform an ECM software update or reprogramming if available
  5. Replace the ECM/PCM if the internal module is confirmed faulty
