CMP Sensor B — Circuit (Bank 1)
Meaning
The engine control module has detected a generic electrical fault in the camshaft position sensor B (CMP B) circuit of Bank 1. Sensor B is typically associated with the exhaust camshaft (or second camshaft) of Bank 1; the signal is absent, out of range, or behaving abnormally.
Common causes
- Faulty CMP B sensor Bank 1 (internal open, short, or drift)
- Open, grounded, or powered-shorted wiring to the CMP B sensor
- Corroded, loose, or damaged sensor connector
- Damaged or deposit-covered camshaft B reluctor wheel
- Excessive air gap between sensor and reluctor wheel
- Supply voltage or ground fault for the CMP B sensor
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Hard or extended cranking start
- Loss of VVT control on the Bank 1 exhaust camshaft
- Reduced power and increased fuel consumption
- Possible VVT-related fault codes for Bank 1 (e.g., P0014)
Severity
High: without a CMP B signal the ECM cannot precisely control Bank 1 exhaust camshaft timing, resulting in efficiency loss and possible engine damage.
What to do
- Locate the CMP B sensor on Bank 1 (typically exhaust side) and verify supply voltage and ground
- Measure signal voltage with the engine running
- Check for short to ground or to power on the signal wire
- Inspect the connector for oxidation, loose pins, or physical damage
- Replace the Bank 1 CMP B sensor if wiring is found serviceable
