CMP Sensor A — Circuit (Bank 2)
Meaning
The engine control module has detected a generic electrical fault in the camshaft position sensor A (CMP A) circuit of Bank 2 (the bank opposite cylinder 1). The signal is absent, out of range, or behaving abnormally; the ECM cannot determine the intake camshaft position for Bank 2.
Common causes
- Faulty CMP A sensor Bank 2 (internal open, short, or drift)
- Open, grounded, or powered-shorted wiring to the Bank 2 CMP sensor
- Corroded, loose, or damaged sensor connector
- Damaged or mispositioned camshaft reluctor wheel on Bank 2
- Excessive air gap between sensor and reluctor wheel
- Supply voltage or ground fault for the Bank 2 sensor
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Hard or extended cranking start
- Bank 2 loses sequential injection synchronization
- Rough idle and power loss
- Possible VVT-related fault code for Bank 2
Severity
High: without a CMP signal on Bank 2 the ECM cannot perform sequential injection or VVT control on that bank, reducing performance and efficiency.
What to do
- Identify the Bank 2 CMP sensor wiring route and verify supply voltage and ground
- Measure signal voltage with the engine running and compare with Bank 1
- Check for short to ground or to power on the signal wire
- Inspect the connector for oxidation, loose pins, or physical damage
- Replace the Bank 2 CMP sensor if wiring is found serviceable
