Misfire detected — insufficient fuel
Meaning
The ECU has detected misfire events correlated with an insufficient quantity of fuel in the cylinder. The ECU combines standard misfire detection with fuel level data or circuit pressure to qualify the cause.
Common causes
- Very low fuel level or nearly empty tank
- Weak or failing fuel pump providing insufficient pressure
- Clogged fuel filter restricting flow to the injectors
- Blocked or low-flow injectors
- Faulty fuel pressure regulator
- Fuel circuit leak causing pressure drop
Symptoms
- Check Engine light on, possibly flashing
- Loss of power, especially under high load
- Engine hesitates or stalls when the tank is nearly empty
- Rough running or jerking during acceleration
- Possible low fuel warning light active
Severity
Grave: Fuel-starvation misfire can overheat the catalytic converter and in extreme cases cause engine stall or seizure.
What to do
- Check the fuel level and refuel if necessary
- Measure fuel pressure at idle and at various engine speeds
- Replace the fuel filter if overdue
- Test fuel pump flow rate
- Check resistance and flow rate of each injector
