Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent
Meaning
The fuel pressure sensor signal on the common rail is unstable or shows rapid, irregular variations unrelated to engine operating conditions. The ECM cannot establish a reliable reading.
Common causes
- Loose sensor connector or oxidised terminals
- Damaged wiring with intermittent contact
- Rail pressure sensor with internal intermittent fault
- Electromagnetic interference on the signal circuit
- Vibration causing micro-interruptions in the circuit
Symptoms
- Intermittent check-engine light
- Rail pressure reading with sudden spikes or drops
- Erratic engine behaviour at varying speeds
- Pressure relief valve activation
- Fault difficult to reproduce in the workshop
Severity
High: signal instability prevents correct rail pressure regulation; injector damage risk.
What to do
- Inspect the sensor connector: clean terminals and check locking
- Check wiring along its route for heat damage, chafing, or pinching
- Replace the sensor if circuit tests pass but the fault persists
- Verify signal wire shielding against EMI
- Perform a road test with live data logging to capture the intermittent fault
