Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Stable Operation
Meaning
The ECU detects that coolant temperature does not reach or sustain the minimum level required for steady-state operation. Unlike P0125, this code refers to the inability to maintain the rated temperature during normal driving, not just during warm-up.
Common causes
- Thermostat stuck open or opening prematurely
- Faulty ECT sensor with systematically low readings
- Cooling system leaks causing insufficient coolant level
- Cooling fan running continuously due to relay fault
- Extended low-speed driving with a borderline thermostat
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) on
- Persistently low engine temperature gauge reading
- Increased fuel consumption
- Elevated HC/CO emissions
- Reduced performance due to prolonged enrichment
Severity
Moderate: engine never reaches optimal temperature, negatively affecting emissions, fuel economy, and wear; likely a failed thermostat.
What to do
- Monitor ECT temperature live with a scan tool during normal driving
- Verify whether the thermostat opens before its rated temperature
- Compare ECT sensor reading with an independent thermometer
- Check the cooling fan relay and control for unintended continuous operation
- Replace the thermostat if it opens below rated temperature
