ECT Sensor — Intermittent Signal
Meaning
The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor signal shows erratic variations inconsistent with the engine's thermal state. The ECU detects non-continuous plausibility violations.
Common causes
- ECT sensor connector with intermittent contacts or corrosion
- Chafed wiring insulation with micro-breaks causing false contacts
- Degraded resistive element in the ECT sensor subject to thermal variation
- Intermittent sensor ground connection
- Electrical interference on the signal circuit
Symptoms
- Check-engine light switching on and off unpredictably
- Sudden swings of the temperature gauge
- Transient mixture and timing changes
- Fault code that disappears and reappears
- Possible irregularities only under certain temperature conditions
Severity
Low to moderate: difficult to diagnose due to intermittent nature; if ignored, may develop into a permanent fault with thermal management consequences.
What to do
- Inspect the ECT connector: check contacts, locking, and cleanliness
- Inspect the wiring along its entire run for chafing and loose connections
- Monitor the ECT signal live with a scan tool during a road test
- Measure sensor resistance at various operating temperatures
- Replace the sensor or repair the wiring based on findings
