Fuel System — Large Leak Detected
Meaning
The engine control module has detected that the rail pressure drop is significantly faster and/or larger than expected for the operating conditions. A substantial fuel leak exists in the high-pressure circuit, sufficient to prevent the system from reaching or maintaining operating pressure.
Common causes
- Injector with severely damaged seat or needle leaking into the combustion chamber or return line
- Structurally leaking rail fitting, high-pressure line, or pump-to-rail connection
- Severely worn HP pump unable to compensate for circuit losses
- Open or stuck pressure limiter valve (PLV)
- Defective HP pump body seal leaking into the low-pressure circuit
- Loose or thread-damaged rail pressure sensor
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- No-start or very hard cranking start
- Engine stalls while driving
- Dense smoke (white or black) from the exhaust
- Possible fuel smell or visible fuel traces in the engine bay
Severity
Critical: a large HP leak can leave the vehicle unable to run, cause engine damage from abnormal injection, and present a fire risk if fuel exits externally.
What to do
- Visually inspect the entire HP circuit for fuel traces (lines, fittings, pump, injectors)
- Perform a rail pressure leak-down test with the engine off to quantify the leak
- Test each injector for internal leakage (excessive return) using a back-leak test
- Check and torque all HP fittings; replace damaged lines or fittings
- Replace the HP pump or PLV if the leak is internal to their housing
