Fuel Metering Valve 1 — Circuit

Meaning

The engine control module has detected a generic electrical fault in the fuel metering valve (IMV/FMV) circuit of fuel system 1. The control signal is absent, out of range, or the circuit exhibits a short circuit, open, or abnormal resistance; the ECM is unable to modulate fuel flow to the HP pump.

Common causes

  • Internally failed fuel metering valve (IMV/FMV)
  • Metering valve wiring open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged metering valve connector
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for the metering valve supply circuit
  • Defective ECM output driver for the metering valve
  • Supply voltage or ground fault in the metering valve circuit

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
  • Hard start or no-start
  • Uncontrolled rail pressure (too high or too low)
  • Rough idle and misfires
  • Power reduction or limp-home mode activated

Severity

Very high: without metering valve control the rail pressure is unregulated; a short to power can cause dangerously high rail pressure.

What to do

  1. Measure the metering valve resistance and compare with manufacturer specifications
  2. Verify supply voltage and PWM control signal at the connector
  3. Check wiring for shorts to ground or power and circuit continuity
  4. Inspect the connector for oxidation, pushed-back pins, or damage
  5. Replace the metering valve if wiring is found serviceable
