O2 Sensor Heater Resistance — Bank 1, Sensor 1
Meaning
The ECU measured the heater element resistance of the upstream O2 sensor on bank 1 outside the expected range. A resistance value too high or too low indicates a degraded heater element or a wiring issue altering the current reading.
Common causes
- Partially deteriorated internal heater element (out-of-tolerance resistance)
- Partial short circuit in the heater circuit lowering measured resistance
- High contact resistance in connector or wiring due to corrosion
- O2 sensor degraded by age or thermal damage
- Rare: ECU internal calibration issue
Symptoms
- Check engine light (MIL) on
- Possible sensor over- or under-heating affecting lambda signal accuracy
- Slightly increased fuel consumption
- No obvious drivability symptoms in most cases
Severity
Low to moderate: the heater operates abnormally, compromising sensor performance, but rarely causes serious drivability issues.
What to do
- Measure heater resistance at connector pins (OEM specification, typically 2–30 Ω) and compare with OEM values
- Inspect connector for corrosion and loose contacts
- Check for voltage drop across wiring during heater operation
- Replace O2 sensor B1S1 if resistance is out of specification
