VVT Intake Cam Actuator A — Circuit (Bank 2)

Meaning

The engine control module has detected an electrical fault in the VVT actuator control circuit (oil control valve) for intake camshaft A on Bank 2 (the bank opposite cylinder 1). The control signal is absent, out of range, or the circuit exhibits a short circuit, open, or abnormal resistance.

Common causes

  • Faulty or oil-deposit-clogged VVT solenoid (OCV) for Bank 2 intake
  • Bank 2 VVT solenoid wiring open, shorted to ground, or shorted to power
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged Bank 2 solenoid connector
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for the Bank 2 VVT circuit
  • Defective ECM output driver for the Bank 2 VVT solenoid
  • Supply voltage or ground fault in the Bank 2 VVT circuit

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle, especially when cold
  • Torque and power loss at mid-range RPM on Bank 2
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible operating asymmetry between Bank 1 and Bank 2

Severity

High: loss of VVT intake control on Bank 2 fixes camshaft timing in a non-optimal position, reducing performance and increasing emissions on that bank.

What to do

  1. Measure the Bank 2 intake VVT solenoid resistance and compare with specifications
  2. Verify supply voltage and PWM signal at the Bank 2 solenoid connector
  3. Check wiring for shorts to ground or power and circuit continuity
  4. Clean or replace the Bank 2 intake VVT solenoid if clogged
  5. Check engine oil level and quality
