Lost Communication With Instrument Cluster (IPC)
Meaning
The ECU has lost communication over the data network with the instrument panel cluster (IPC) module. The dashboard no longer receives or sends the correct data to the other modules.
Common causes
- CAN wiring to the cluster broken or shorted
- Corroded or loose cluster connector
- Missing cluster power supply or ground
- Faulty instrument cluster module
- Network disturbance from another faulty module
Symptoms
- Instruments off, frozen or with multiple lights
- Speedometer/tachometer not working
- Warning lights on several systems
- Possible no-start if the immobiliser runs through the cluster
Severity
Moderate/serious: losing the cluster removes information from the driver and can involve the immobiliser; fix it.
What to do
- Check the instrument cluster power supply and ground
- Check continuity of the CAN wires to the cluster
- Inspect connectors for corrosion and contacts
- Isolate the disturbing module if several modules are involved
