DPF Regeneration Duration — Out of Limits

Meaning

The active regeneration of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has exceeded the maximum permitted time without completing successfully. The ECU has detected that the soot combustion process inside the DPF has not concluded within the expected time window.

Common causes

  • Excessively clogged DPF (soot load too high for a single regeneration cycle)
  • Insufficient exhaust gas temperature to sustain soot combustion (short urban driving cycles)
  • Defective post-injection injector or fuel dosing system for regeneration
  • Faulty EGT or DPF temperature sensor incorrectly aborting regeneration
  • Fuel loss in the active regeneration system
  • Adverse ambient conditions (very low outside temperature) reducing exhaust temperature

Symptoms

  • DPF and check engine warning lights on
  • Regeneration not completed despite prolonged driving cycles
  • Increased fuel consumption during regeneration attempts
  • Burning smell from the exhaust
  • Progressive power reduction

Severity

High: if regeneration cannot complete, the DPF fully clogs, causing severe power loss, turbocharger damage, and possible filter replacement.

What to do

  1. Perform a stationary forced regeneration via scan tool in a safe location
  2. Monitor exhaust gas temperature during regeneration (target typically 550–650 °C at the DPF)
  3. Check the operation of post-injection injectors and the fuel dosing system
  4. Inspect EGT sensors upstream and downstream of the DPF for plausible readings
  5. If the DPF does not respond to forced regeneration, consider cleaning or replacement
