Wideband O2 Sensor B1S1 — Ground Circuit Open
Meaning
The ECU detects an open circuit on the ground line of the upstream wideband (AFR) sensor, bank 1. Without a stable signal ground, the sensor cannot operate correctly and closed-loop mixture control is interrupted.
Common causes
- Broken sensor ground wire or corroded connector pin
- Failed wideband O2 sensor (internal ground open)
- Poor contact or corrosion on the ground pin at the ECU connector
- Loose or corroded chassis ground near the sensor
- Short to power in the ground wiring
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Open-loop operation, mixture uncontrolled
- AFR signal absent or fixed in diagnostics
- Increased fuel consumption
- High exhaust emissions (CO, HC)
Severity
High: without signal ground the sensor is inoperative, causing loss of mixture control and risk of catalytic converter damage.
What to do
- Inspect the B1S1 sensor connector and ground wire for breaks, corrosion, or poor contacts
- Measure resistance between the sensor ground pin and ECU ground (should be < 1 Ω)
- Check the chassis ground connection integrity in the sensor area
- Replace the wideband O2 sensor if wiring is intact
- If the fault persists after replacement, inspect the ground pin at the ECU
