Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Meaning

The diesel particulate filter is not filtering effectively or is blocked. The ECU detects efficiency below the allowed threshold.

Common causes

  • Clogged or aged DPF, saturated with soot and ash
  • Too many short trips with interrupted or incomplete regenerations
  • Faulty differential-pressure sensor
  • Faulty exhaust gas temperature sensors
  • Blocked, disconnected or damaged pressure-sensor hoses
  • An upstream problem producing excess soot (injection, EGR)

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light, possibly a DPF light
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Frequent regeneration attempts
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Smoke from the exhaust

Severity

Moderate: the vehicle is drivable, but the DPF must be serviced to avoid full blockage and limp mode.

What to do

  1. Read estimated soot load, back-pressure and distance since the last regeneration
  2. Run a regeneration (including a forced one) under suitable conditions
  3. Check the differential-pressure sensor and its hoses
  4. Clean or service the DPF if blocked and correct the upstream cause of excess soot
