Transmission Line Pressure Low
Meaning
The transmission control module has detected that the automatic transmission hydraulic line pressure is below the expected minimum value. Line pressure is the main pressure that feeds all transmission hydraulic circuits and governs correct engagement of clutches and bands.
Common causes
- Worn transmission oil pump with insufficient output
- Low ATF level or external transmission fluid leak
- Clogged ATF filter limiting flow to the pump
- Line pressure regulator valve stuck in the open position
- Internal leaks in the valve body or hydraulic distributors
- Worn seals in clutch packs or pistons causing pressure loss
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Transmission slipping in multiple gears
- Delayed, soft, or absent gear shifts
- Transmission overheating
- Transmission entering limp mode
Severity
Very high: low line pressure causes widespread clutch slippage, rapid wear, and risk of irreversible transmission damage in a short time.
What to do
- Immediately check ATF level and condition; top up or replace as necessary
- Measure line pressure with an appropriate gauge and compare to specification values
- Replace ATF filter and fluid if clogged or degraded
- Inspect the pressure regulator valve in the valve body
- Consider a full transmission overhaul if pressure is severely insufficient
