Clutch Position Control — Malfunction
Meaning
The transmission control module (TCM) has detected a fault in the clutch position control circuit. The position sensor signal falls outside expected values during engagement or disengagement phases.
Common causes
- Faulty or out-of-calibration clutch position sensor
- Open, shorted, or high-resistance sensor circuit
- Defective electro-hydraulic clutch actuator
- Pressure loss in the hydraulic clutch circuit
- Corroded connectors or damaged wiring to the TCM
- Faulty TCM (rare cause)
Symptoms
- Check engine / transmission warning light illuminated
- Difficulty engaging gears or harsh shifting
- Transmission locked in limp (emergency) mode
- Jerking or slipping during gear changes
- In some cases no obvious drivability symptoms
Severity
High: imprecise clutch control can cause accelerated wear, transmission damage, and loss of vehicle control.
What to do
- Read all stored fault codes and note freeze-frame data
- Inspect the clutch position sensor and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections
- Measure sensor circuit voltage and resistance against manufacturer specifications
- Check hydraulic pressure in the clutch circuit with a dedicated gauge
- Replace the sensor or repair wiring; recalibrate the clutch via diagnostic tool if required
