Shift Solenoid A Malfunction
Meaning
The transmission control module has detected a fault in the shift solenoid A (SSA) circuit. The solenoid does not respond correctly to the command signal, resulting in abnormal gear selection for the ratios controlled by SSA.
Common causes
- Internally defective SSA solenoid (open or shorted coil)
- Short to ground or short to battery in the SSA control wire
- Open circuit in wiring to SSA
- Oxidised or loose connectors on the transmission housing
- Valve body obstruction in the SSA solenoid channel
- Internal TCM fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Transmission fails to engage or engages abnormally in SSA-controlled gears
- Transmission in limp mode
- Harsh or erratic gear shifts
- Slipping or failure to engage in certain gears
Severity
High: the fault impairs gear selection and can cause progressive clutch damage in the transmission.
What to do
- Check ATF level and condition
- Measure SSA solenoid resistance with a multimeter (typically 10–15 Ω)
- Check supply voltage and command signal at the SSA connector
- Inspect wiring for shorts or open circuits
- Replace SSA solenoid if outside specification or valve body if obstructed
