Incorrect Gear Ratio (Generic)
Meaning
The TCM has detected a transmission ratio error that cannot be attributed to a specific gear, or the general ratio monitoring system has identified a persistent deviation between the calculated and expected ratio. The code may appear when the fault affects multiple gears or when the system cannot isolate the specific gear involved.
Common causes
- Low ATF level or degraded/contaminated fluid affecting multiple gear ratios
- Faulty input or output shaft speed sensor producing incorrect ratio readings
- One or more defective or stuck shift solenoids
- Valve body fault causing insufficient hydraulic pressure across multiple circuits
- Generalized wear of internal clutch packs
- Mechanical internal damage to the transmission (gears, shafts, differential)
Symptoms
- MIL illuminated
- Transmission locked in limp-home mode
- Generalized slipping or erratic shift behavior
- Shudder or jolts during acceleration
- Engine RPM rising without corresponding vehicle speed increase
- Reduced engine power output
Severity
High severity: a generic ratio error indicates a widespread transmission problem that, if ignored, can lead to complete deterioration of internal components and may require full transmission replacement.
What to do
- Check ATF level and condition; replace if degraded or contaminated
- Read all stored DTCs: the presence of companion codes P0731–P0738 helps identify which specific gears are affected
- Monitor live input and output shaft speed data with a diagnostic scanner to verify signal consistency
- Test all shift solenoids for resistance and electrical operation
- If electronic components test within specification, perform a complete internal transmission teardown to evaluate clutch pack and mechanical component wear
