Output Speed Sensor Circuit

Meaning

An electrical fault has been detected in the transmission output shaft speed sensor circuit. This sensor supplies vehicle speed data to the TCM, which uses it for shift control and torque converter management. The code indicates an electrical problem in the circuit such as out-of-range voltage, short circuit, or open circuit.

Common causes

  • Failed output shaft speed sensor
  • Wiring harness fault (short circuit or open circuit)
  • Oxidized, loose, or damaged sensor connector
  • Interference in the circuit from other electrical components
  • Internal TCM fault

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Transmission in limp/fail-safe mode
  • Speedometer not functioning correctly or showing erroneous values
  • Abnormal or absent gear shifts
  • ABS or traction control system generating related fault codes

Severity

High severity: loss of the output speed signal compromises transmission management and can render other safety systems that rely on this data unreliable.

What to do

  1. Read fault codes and check transmission output speed live data
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring harness for corrosion, breaks, or short circuits
  3. Measure sensor supply voltage and resistance against specifications
  4. Check sensor circuit continuity with a multimeter
  5. Replace the sensor if defective; evaluate the TCM if the wiring harness is intact
