Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
Meaning
The input/turbine speed sensor signal is present but erratic or implausible relative to the expected ratio between engine speed and output shaft speed. The TCM receives a signal but detects its inconsistency with other operating parameters. The fault is functional rather than purely electrical.
Common causes
- Damaged reluctor ring with missing or deformed teeth
- Excessive air gap between sensor and reluctor ring
- Intermittent contact in the wiring harness or sensor connector
- Sensor contaminated by metallic debris
- Contaminated transmission fluid interfering with the sensor
- Internal sensor fault producing an unstable signal
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated, sometimes intermittently
- Harsh, irregular, or unpredictable gear shifts
- Transmission cycling in and out of limp mode
- Perceived torque converter slip
- Improper traction control interventions
Severity
Medium to high severity: the erratic signal degrades shift quality and can cause cumulative damage to clutch packs and internal transmission components.
What to do
- Read fault codes and monitor input speed live data during a road test
- Inspect the reluctor ring for damage, broken, or missing teeth
- Check the air gap between sensor and reluctor ring against manufacturer specifications
- Inspect sensor connector and wiring for intermittent contacts or corrosion
- Clean the sensor of any metallic deposits and retest operation
