Transmission Control System Range/Performance

Meaning

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected an internal logic inconsistency or an implausible operating range within the transmission control system. The TCM cannot reconcile the received signals with expected transmission operation. This may indicate a TCM software or hardware fault, or severe electrical interference.

Common causes

  • Internal TCM malfunction (faulty hardware or corrupted software)
  • Severe electrical interference or noise on the communication bus (CAN)
  • Unstable or out-of-tolerance TCM supply voltage or ground
  • Incorrect or incomplete TCM software update
  • Combination of multiple electrical faults in the transmission generating inconsistent signals
  • TCM damaged by overvoltage or fluid ingress

Symptoms

  • Transmission or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Incorrect, delayed, or absent gear shifts
  • Transmission locked in limp mode at a fixed gear
  • Unpredictable automatic transmission behavior
  • Possible inability to select certain gears
  • Multiple simultaneous fault codes stored in the TCM

Severity

High severity: the vehicle may be stuck in limp mode with severely limited drivability; a faulty TCM requires immediate diagnosis to prevent transmission damage.

What to do

  1. Retrieve all fault codes stored in the TCM and other modules; document concurrent codes
  2. Verify TCM supply voltage (battery voltage, dedicated fuses) and ground connections
  3. Check CAN bus integrity and TCM connector condition
  4. Reset the TCM and perform a road test to determine if the code returns
  5. If the code persists without identifiable electrical causes, reprogram or replace the TCM
