EVAP System Malfunction

Meaning

The ECU detects a general fault in the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system, which prevents the fuel-tank vapours from being properly contained.

Common causes

  • Loose, damaged fuel cap or faulty cap seal
  • Faulty or stuck purge valve
  • Faulty vent valve
  • Cracked or disconnected EVAP hoses
  • Damaged charcoal canister

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Sometimes a fuel smell
  • Possible emissions-test failure
  • Usually no effect on drivability
  • Possible hard restart right after refuelling

Severity

Moderate: an evaporative-emissions issue with no immediate mechanical risk.

What to do

  1. Check the fuel cap and its seal first
  2. Inspect the EVAP hoses and connections for cracks or disconnected joints
  3. Check the operation of the purge and vent valves
  4. Run an EVAP system leak test to locate the leak
