Turbocharger Overboost Condition
Meaning
Boost pressure exceeds the value requested by the ECU. An overboost condition can stress the engine and turbocharger.
Common causes
- Wastegate stuck closed or variable-geometry (VGT) vanes seized
- Faulty wastegate/VGT actuator
- Faulty boost-control solenoid
- Actuator wiring or control fault
- Damaged or disconnected vacuum/pressure control hoses
- Inaccurate boost pressure sensor
Symptoms
- Limp mode
- Surging and jerky running
- Sudden power cut
- Check-engine light on
- Abnormal noise from the turbocharger
Severity
High: the vehicle may enter limp mode; repeated overboost can damage the turbo.
What to do
- Read live data: desired vs actual boost pressure and actuator command
- Check the movement of the wastegate/variable geometry and its actuator
- Inspect the boost-control solenoid, hoses and wiring
- Replace the faulty component (actuator, solenoid or turbo) after confirmation
