Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit High

Meaning

Voltage in the fuel pump secondary feedback circuit exceeds the maximum expected threshold. The ECM detects excessive voltage in the feedback circuit, which can indicate a short to supply voltage or a fault in the feedback path.

Common causes

  • Short to supply voltage in the secondary circuit wiring
  • Relay driver transistor or ECM failure (signal stuck high)
  • Damaged feedback wiring bridged to battery voltage
  • Faulty relay protection diode
  • Electrical interference in the feedback circuit

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Possible abnormal pump behaviour (pump continues running after switch-off)
  • Relay or circuit overheating
  • Abnormal fuel consumption
  • In severe cases: wiring short circuit with heat damage

Severity

Moderate to high: secondary circuit high voltage can cause thermal overload of the relay or pump; repair without delay.

What to do

  1. Measure secondary circuit voltage with engine off and engine running
  2. Check for shorts to battery in the feedback wiring
  3. Inspect the pump relay for overheating or damage
  4. Check the relay protection diode
  5. Verify ECM driver if wiring is intact
