Mass air flow (MAF) sensor range/performance

Meaning

The control unit detects that the mass air flow sensor signal is implausible compared with the other engine parameters. The measured airflow value is outside the expected window.

Common causes

  • Dirty or contaminated MAF sensing element
  • Intake air leak downstream of the MAF
  • Faulty mass air flow sensor
  • Clogged air filter
  • Restriction or blockage in the intake duct

Symptoms

  • Hesitation and stumbling on acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle
  • Loss of power
  • Check-engine light on

Severity

Moderate: the car is drivable but with uneven power delivery; it is best to fix it to avoid high fuel use and poor engine response.

What to do

  1. Read the MAF airflow value live and compare it with expected figures at idle and on acceleration
  2. Inspect the intake ducting between the MAF and the manifold for air leaks
  3. Clean the MAF element with a dedicated cleaner and check the air filter condition
  4. If the readings remain implausible, replace the mass air flow sensor
