Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 — Performance
Meaning
The engine control module has detected that the common-rail pressure does not match the commanded target: the pressure regulator is unable to correctly maintain or modulate pressure within the expected operating range. The fault is not necessarily electrical but functional/hydraulic.
Common causes
- Fuel pressure regulating valve clogged, worn, or stuck in partial position
- Worn high-pressure (HP) pump with insufficient flow
- Internal injector leakage bleeding pressure from the rail
- Clogged fuel filter restricting flow to the HP pump
- Insufficient low-pressure supply (electric pump) to the LP circuit
- Rail pressure sensor (RPS) with drift providing an incorrect reading to the ECM
Symptoms
- Check-engine light (MIL) illuminated
- Hard starting, especially when cold
- Rough idle and misfires under acceleration
- Black smoke (excess fuel) or white smoke (unburned fuel) from the exhaust
- Reduced engine power and efficiency
Severity
High: uncontrolled rail pressure compromises injection quality and can damage injectors, the HP pump, and rail components.
What to do
- Read rail pressure in real time at various RPM and compare with target values
- Check the low-pressure circuit supply pressure (electric pump)
- Perform a rail leak-down test with engine off to detect injector leakage
- Check and replace the fuel filter if clogged
- Test the pressure regulating valve and HP pump; replace worn components
