Steering Position — Malfunction
Meaning
The module detects an invalid or inconsistent steering position signal. The steering angle value is used by ESP, electric power steering and driver aids, which become limited.
Common causes
- Faulty or uncalibrated steering angle sensor
- Faulty sensor wiring or connector
- Sensor not zeroed after steering/suspension work
- Faulty steering or power steering module
- Geometry/alignment altered after an impact
Symptoms
- ESP and/or power steering light on
- Heavier electric steering or variable assistance
- Limited stability control
- Possible abnormal steering return torque
Severity
Moderate/serious: losing the steering angle limits ESP and power steering; correct it for safety.
What to do
- Read the live steering angle value (centre and lock)
- Perform the steering angle sensor calibration/zeroing
- Check the sensor wiring and connector
- Check the steering module if calibration fails
